01

Overview

Twiine is a mobile app currently in development and undergoing beta testing, with a launch planned for late 2025.

This case study covers all 0f the design phases, research, and elements that I have been working on since the conception of Twiine in November 2024.

02

Background

Twiine began as an attempt to reimagine what networking can look and feel in Vancouver's tech scene.

Vancouver, British Columbia has a strong presence in industries such as film, tourism, construction, and natural resources, but in recent years, it has been carving out a name for itself as a tech hub.

Professional networking, however, hasn’t evolved to match this shift.

Instead, platforms like LinkedIn remain the standard, with impersonal interactions often feeling one-sided or overwhelming, especially for mentors, students, and early-career professionals.

Twiine asks:

What if networking felt more reciprocal and personal instead of just being a shot in the dark?

03

Research Focus

Understand current networking practices and pain points to ideate around.

Goals:

  • Explore how professionals in Vancouver prefer to connect

  • Understand what people want to 'get' out of networking

  • Identify gaps and unmet needs in existing professional platforms

Reserach Methods

  • Survey Analysis of existing networking data

  • Field Observations of networking events in and around Vancouver

  • Informal Interviews with 'network-ers' such as students, job seekers, and working professionals

  • Competitor Review (LinkedIn, Bumble Bizz, Fishbowl, etc.)

07

Design

After defining Twiine's functionality and features through research, I planned how to implement them through design.

Architecture

Created a detailed sitemap to organize key user flows such as onboarding, matching, messaging, and profile management. Prioritized intuitive navigation and progressive disclosure to reduce information overload.

I used the sitemap to build the information architecture. This helped map specific input fields and interactions I'd have to design moving forward.

Wireframes

Started with low-fidelity wireframes for rapid iteration & refined them moving forward through team feedback, usability heuristics, and evolving features.

Initial Screens:

  • Homepage

  • Profile Page

  • Events

  • Matches

  • Community

Many of these initial screens were removed/changed through the course of wireframing as our goals for the app also changed.

07

Prototypes

Initial protypes helped developers understand user flows and interactions, the designs & prototypes seen below have since evolved and changed in many ways.

08

Identity

I developed a comprehensive branding identity and strategy for Twiine, including; visuals, copywriting, and custom brand assets/icons.

Design System

Built a system focused on clarity and core brand values, through:

  • Muted colours for accessibility, with the palette evoking trust & professionalism

  • Round, legible typography

  • Intentional usage of colour for different features

  • Spacing that supports legibility & scaling

Branding

Twiine's logo design is a wordmark featuring the brand name, reflecting the brand's characteristics such as trust, friendliness, professionalism, and approachability, while also differentiating it from its competitors.

I explored variations of the logo to be used in a range of applications such as; mobile, website, dark/light modes, and social media platforms.

Social Media

Started building a LinkedIn presence to reach potential early adopters, beta testers, and tech professionals in the Vancouver area.

09

Testing

Twiine is currently undergoing testing phases to; better understand our user base, validate our current features, & to help ideate potential new features.

Usability Testing

In Progress:

  • Validate onboarding clarity and swipe logic

  • Check for accessibility issues (font size, contrast, tap targets)

  • Observe first-time users during onboarding + first match

Beta Testing

Goals:

  • Collect analytics on match completion, profile creation, and swipe behavior

  • Host small-group test events in local tech meetups and student communities

  • Refine features based on feedback before market release

10

Outcome(s)

I have been working on all aspects of Twiine's design since November 2024, my contributions thus far include:

  • Mobile prototypes for iOS/Android

    • Onboarding

    • Match features

    • Messaging

    • Toolkit

  • Hi-fidelity wireframes of planned features

  • Twiine waitlist website design & management

Reflections

Working on Twiine has challenged me to wear many hats, as; UX researcher, interaction designer, copywriter, brand strategist…

As the sole designer on the team, I lead the product’s design direction from the ground up and across all stages. Working in a startup environment has taught me to move fast and to think holistically as I translated research into product decisions.

This experience strengthened my ability to design with both empathy and strategy, while collaborating closely with a cross-functional team to bring an idea to life.

As the app moves into beta testing and prepares for launch, I’m excited to keep learning, iterating, and refining Twiine alongside our users!
